The Ocean Planet by Herb Kane and Jon Lomberg Two of Hawaii's best known artists have collaborated on a significant new painting, a portrait of the Pacific Ocean as seen from space. Herb Kane and Jon Lomberg have combined their unique skills to blend ancient traditional and modern images of Polynesia, whose many islands are sprinkled through the sea like the stars dotting the night sky. Kane and Lomberg are friends and fellow residents of South Kona, Hawaii. Kane asked Lomberg to work with him on a depiction of the Pacific hemisphere of Earth. Kane supplied the initial conception, composition and mapping of the islands, based on a map he had made for the National Geographic Society magazine. Lomberg completed the painting of Earth and added the background sky which shows some of the important stars and constellations used in the Hawaiian calendar and navigation.

The Ocean Planet Artists Jon Lomberg and Herb Kane "This image shows our home in the ocean of water and the ocean of stars". Herb Kawainui Kane is famous for his vivid depictions of life in Hawaii long ago. His artwork can be seen in publications, murals, museum exhibits and on US postage stamps. Jon Lomberg was astronomer Carl Sagan's colleague for 25 years, winning an EMMY Award for his work on the television series COSMOS. In 1998, Asteroid Lomberg was named in his honor by the International Astronautical Union.
